As I promised in earlier posts, I was going to stop keeping my goals to myself and share them with my blog followers all ten of you ;).
Lately I have been thinking, the Boston Marathon is in 17 days…I finally will get to accomplish my goal of racing in this epic race, a goal that I have had for 7 years! Last weekend I crush my best 5K time and finally went sub-20:00, a goal I have had for 12 years!…With all these goals finally being accomplished, it is time to add some more to the list.
Last year I started contemplating attempting to become a Marathon Maniac which has some stiff qualifying standards. I trained all winter to run and BQ at the Earth Day Challenge Marathon on 4.25.10. Mother Nature had it out for me that day and delivered hot temps and high humidity basically my race day recipe for disaster. I started out strong, but quickly fell apart after the half-way point, and eventually gave up and came in at a 4:10:11. Not terrible by any means, but nowhere near my BQ standard of 3:40:59. Near the mile 22 mark in the race I decided that I was going to try again at the Cleveland Marathon, a mere 3 weeks later on 5.16.10. The BQ stars aligned for me that day and I nailed my BQ with a 3:37:04. This PR occurred after flying home from a weekend wedding in San Diego and not getting home until midnight, sleeping for a few hours, and then bolting out the door to downtown CLE for the race and surviving on sub-par airport food the entire day prior. I don’t get it either.
I was THIS close to signing up for one more marathon in the coming weeks, to obtain Maniac status, but there really wasn’t anything near by that wasn’t already sold out. So I decided to save the goal of becoming a Maniac for another time, and just enjoy my BQ.
Now that the thrill of my BQ has faded, it’s time let loose and get a lil’ crazy. You see, another goal of yours truly is to run every marathon in my beloved state of Ohio. So far I’ve done Columbus, Cleveland and the Earth Day Challenge. That leaves quite a few on my list: Airforce (Dayton), Akron, Athens, Canton, Glass City (Toledo), Towpath & the Flying Pig (Cincinnati). I have had my eyes on the Flying Pig for some time, and it just so happens it is 13 days after Boston. Which would qualify me for Bronze Status according to the powers at be in Marathon Maniac Land. Schwing!
Boston is still my main focus right now. I feel strong, fast and ready. I would love to score a PR at Boston, who wouldn’t? But not just PR, I mean CRUSH my previous 3:37! If all goes well, and this happens, then looks like I will be doing a nice lil’ 26.2 mile victory lap through the streets of Cincy! Oh who am I kidding, I will run as fast as my legs will carry me that day too.
PS. Just so happens there may be another newbie Maniac in the CLE this spring as well!
And for all this craziness, one song came to mind…
