Run: 0.75 mile run, 0.75 mile walk back home. FML. Okay, so I have some pain in the top of both of my feet. I have experienced this before, I think the last time was back in HS when I wore shoes that weren’t the most comfortable for an entire day, only to wake up the next morning with my feet slightly swollen and in a whole lotta pain, causing me to not be able to run for a week or so. This is a very similar situation. On Friday after my workout, I didn’t stretch very much and I quickly got dressed and put on some cute, yet probably definitely too small for me shoes. And wore them ALL day. And it was raining, and I didn’t want to get the bottom of my jeans wet, so while out and about shopping, I decided to walk on my tip-toes. Why I didn’t choose to roll up my pants, and to wear shoes that fit better, is beyond me. A temporary lapse in judgement.
So, Saturday my feet were hurting on my run, and I just sucked it up and pushed through. I sat on my behind the rest of the day and iced and stretched like crazy, in addition to popping a few Aleves and drinking lots of H20. I woke up this morning pain-free! WOO HOO! Until about 4 minutes into my long run. around 6 minutes into the run I decided to scrap it and walk back home. Though depressing, this is a huge victory for me! I realized that I would rather take a little time off now, than injure myself more severely and not get to run Boston at all. This has also caused me to reevaluate my goals…
The bottom line is I want to go to Boston, run and finish the race and have a damn good time doing so! Will it be wonderful to PR and run sub-3:20? Absolutely! Will I still have a freaking fantastic time if I finish in 4 hours or more? Hell yes! It is Boston and I have worked too hard to get there. Boston is the reward, and I am going to do whatever I need to make sure I get to lace up on April 18th and get to have a great experience. This may be the only Boston I will ever run, and I can always chase down 3:20 in other races.
After I googled my face off about my particular foot pain, and Sports Med docs in my area, I put on my bathing suit and headed to the gym. I got a 1 hour deep water run in. When I got home I stretched and foam rolled like it was my j-o-b and I iced both my feet. I plan on taking a few days or so off from road-running, and will focus on doing some deep water running, maybe throw in a few extra rest days, and track down a Doc to make sure the situation isn’t worse than my own personal diagnosis.
This leads me to my goals for 2011:
- I do not want to take things for granted: my health, running pain-free, time spent with friends, family, etc. Life is too short, and nothing is guaranteed. I want to do a better job of living in the moment and appreciating all I have and to stop focusing on what I don’t.
- Stop being so hard on myself. It is okay to take a day or 5 off of working out. I am not going to all of a sudden lose all of my fitness, or gain a bazillion pounds if I don’t log some miles or do X number of strength training sessions.
- I will NOT do P90X. I started doing P90X last year, and I had intentions of doing the entire 90 day program. But honestly, I hated it. It wasn’t enjoyable. I did pick-up a few exercises I enjoy and have added to my strength-training routine. But this program doesn’t line up with my goals. Peace out Tony.
- Double my savings account. The hubs and I live rather comfortably, but we could do even better of a job with saving extra money. We see becoming homeowners in our future (2 year plan) and we want to go on a big vacation somewhere abroad.
I’m sure I will add more things to the list as the year goes on, but that’s what I have in my mind today.
Cheers to another year lived and to a fabulous 2011!

Sounds like some good 2011 goals! Also, very good on caring for your soreness upfront. You are going to have a great Boston experience! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the whole thing!
I am super nervous about getting injured and not being able to run come April! So I am trying to be as smart as possible. You have some rockin’ goals yourself lady! I know we will both dominate the Boston 26.2!
Love your goals. And I’m SO proud of you for turning around on Sunday. You are SO right… Boston is the REWARD! Enjoy it!
Thank you! I am proud of myself, this is a big step for me!
